Fly Fishing Vacation - Planning and Preparation

If your deciding on taking a fly fishing vacation there are several thing you should do in preparation.

1. Decide where you want to take your fly-fishing vacation.  Several things come into play here, travel cost being one of the biggest.  Depending on where you live there might be some great places to go for your fly fishing vacation but many of us are looking at hours if not days of travel to get to the destination. If you live on the east coast you may want to look into the many quality fly fishing locations listed in my previous article.  Those in the Midwest like Indiana, Ohio, Illinois might consider a fly fishing vacation in the Smokey Mountain Area, Michigan, Pennsylvania Wisconsin or Minnesota.  Out west you’ve got some great fly fishing vacation destinations in California, Utah, Wyoming, Oregon, and Montana.  Those that can afford it I highly recommend a cruse that includes some salmon and trout fishing in Alaska or Canada.
2. Do you need to hire a guide for your fly fishing trip?  Most people would benefit  Greatly by hiring a local fishing guide if they have never been to the area before.This can save you hours of driving around looking for the best spot to start your Fishing adventure.  If you decide not to hire a fly fishing guide the make sure to Visit the local DNR and fishing sites to get some fishing maps, location suggestions and local fishing regulations. Don’t expect the local fisherman to give up their sweet spots though.
3. Getting A License for your trip. -  Every state that you visit has different fishing regulations and licensing law so make sure to check these costs before you go.  In addition verify all the trout and salmon regulations for your selected fly-fishing vacation destination. Often times there are multiple restrictions on where, when, and how you can take fish from a river, stream or lake.  The last thing you want to do is spend your fly fishing vacation in jail.
4. Lodging is another large factor involved in planning your fly fishing vacation.  Do you want to stay in a luxury fly fishing lodge, wilderness camp, bed and breakfast or the local motel?  I personally tend to find local campgrounds when I go on fly fishing vacations to help keep the cost of the trip down.  If you plan on taking someone that is pampered a quality fly fishing lodge or similar type fishing resort might be in order.  You don’t want to spoil your fly-fishing vacation with someone whining about the accommodations. What type of fly fishing gear will you need?  This will all depend upon the type of fly fishing your planning on doing and where you decide to go. If you choose to go with a fishing guide, luxury fly fishing lodge or other resort fishing vacation, the fly fishing gear may be provided for you.  If not make sure you have all the necessary equipment before booking your trip.

These are just the basic things that need to be considered when you decide to take a fly-fishing vacation.  I’m sure there are plenty of ideas I missed.  Make yourself a checklist and go through it step by step. This type fly-fishing vacation planning will pay off with an enjoyable trip for everyone.
